Party Hard in NYC

Okay so I'm sorry I didn't post/update sooner but I needed to actually get some sleep and refocus my head.
Friday Sis came down (she finally got here after delays and traffic) and we hung out.
Saturday morning we got up and puttered around the house for a little while then finally got our butts in gear and headed out. We ended up catching the 4pm ferry to NYC. Since I last went they've changed the location of the Manhattan dock but the nice part is, its like right next to the Whitehall subway station now. Instead of being about 1/2 a mile from Bowling Green. I had called Doofie while we were in the ferry terminal and we agreed to meet later in the day at Coda. We were going to go straight to Coda but I messed up the address (got Lush and Coda confused) so Sis and I went to Lush first (its great, smells gorgous in there but you can't individually smell anything) so we just picked out a bunch of bath bombs before going to dinner at Connelly's. Afterwards we walked back to 34th Street and then down to the East Side. Something really funny (and if you know me and directions it's even funnier)--I called my mother to find out which way we turned when we got to 34th Street because I'm not used to having to figure out the whole East/West thing. Well we get back to 34th and Broadway and there's a sign in the middle of the sidewalk. One arrow points left and reads "East" and the other points right and reads "West". OY!
So we turned left and walked down to Madison Ave but we were on the wrong side of the street and walked right past Coda because it was under some scaffolding (instead of having a sign for the club on the outside of the scaffolding, they had an ad for Studio 60--why they do that I have no idea). We went up to the door and found out that we couldn't get in until 8:30 although we had been told the doors opened at 7. I called Doofie (for about the 5th time) and told her we were outside. She had told the gang she would do merch so she and Shelly were already inside. They came out and said hello and chatted for a little while, then went back in. Sis and I hung out outside until 8:30, reading and chatting with each other.
So we finally got in and found out there is no longer a coat room so I had no where to stash my backpack. We made our way up to the front and settled in by the bar but then I went back to talk to Doofie for a minute and buy a t-shirt and Sis got yelled at for sitting there (I really really am sorry, Sis) so we moved to the other side of the stage.
The first band was...interesting and that's about all I can say about them. I have no idea what they're music was supposed to be and we had a really hard time understanding the words to the songs. Sis started wandering around the club and finally convinced me to come to the back with her.
Once I got to the back, I understood why she wanted me to. The green room was not actually a room but a balcony with curtains around it. They weren't quite closed so we could see Storm wandering around.
Then they started spying. Twigger leaned out and waved then started laughing hysterically. Pete also leaned out to look and Ryan came and stood by the stairs to see what was going on. Even Ellery peeked out and then ran downstairs. We saw everyone but Pat, who it turned out was not upstairs with the rest. No idea where he was but about 5 minutes before Storm came on, he went bolting up the stairs.
So finally the other band left and Storm came on. While they were breaking down the stage and setting it back up, Sis and I squeezed our way through the crowd to the front where Lori and her friends were (and had told us to come up for the show and I ended up stashing my backpack under their table). We ended up right near the front (like 2 people back) on Pete's side of the stage. I realized about halfway through the show that somehow we always end up on the Whiskey side for "Me and the Moon".
They were laughing it up right from the beginning.
They came on and started out with "Salt Lick". Then Pat did his "well thanks for coming. Good night." but Twigger "convinced" him to do an encore! So we got the longest encore ever (since they didn't stop playing for good until after 1am). And also got a second encore when they came back out and did Beggarman and Kiss Me I'm Irish.
Pat explained that they had gotten to NYC at around 4pm and they were hanging outside the club waiting to go in and drop stuff off. Some tourist pulled up in a car and said to Pat, "Where's the Empire State Building?". Pat (and he acts this out on stage) turns, bends back slightly and points up. For those of you that don't know the ESB is less than a block from the club. It was hysterical.
They were having a little trouble with the beer that night, for some reason it kept foaming up and overflowing. The first time it happened to Pat and Twigger turns to him and says "Pat, you're supposed to drink it not wear it."
Then towards the end of the show, Pete's did the same thing but Pat had just taken money from him (explain that in a min) and Pete flicked the foam on his hand at Pat. Pat looked at him and said "Canada just declared war on Ireland." Then when Pat was playing the spoons later and Pete wasn't looking, Pat went over and acted like he was going to hit Pete in the head.
Pat was very proud of himself for getting all the words to "Scalliwag" right so then someone asked him to sing "Don't Go for the One" and Pete turns to him and says "Bet you can't" (remember all the words) so they play it and at the end Pat raises both hands and yells "YES!" then turns to Pete and holds his hand out for the money. Pete tried to convince him that he (Pete) didn't have his wallet but he finally had to give in and give Pat the money. Sis said it looked like a 100 dollar bill. I couldn't really see it from where it was although Pat held it up, very proud of himself.
During the show, Pat announced that they were being sponsored or something by a new brand of whiskey called "Michael Collins" and they started tossing/chucking/throwing shot glasses into the audience. After a couple of throws, Twigger explained that everyone could stop ducking, the shot glasses were plastic. Pat chimed in with "Yeah they used to be glass but we took a couple of people out in Cleveland and they got changed."
Honestly they just seemed really happy and excited to be playing. I would say the club was probably overlimit, but they didn't care because it closed down yesterday. I don't think I'd want to go back there for another show anyway. It was a great crowd (and the best show I've been to so far), but we were so crowded on the floor that when Twigger told everyone to dance; he realized we couldn't move and he said "Never mind, everyone just jump up and down, you guys can't move!" Also the stage is really, really small.
Pat was intending just to do (I think) Kenny Chesney, Sweet Home Alabama, and Lenard Skyner, but someone convinced him to do Snoop Dog and Michael Jackson (with the Holy Hand granade of Antioch!) for the intro to Johnny Tarr. Of course when he was done before they started JT, he goes, "Of course you're laughing, I have an accordian strapped to my chest, anything is going to look stupid right now!" He also kept changing the count in for the song.
I was standing next to a guy from Massachusetts during most of the show and he kept trying to get me to yell out that I wanted to hear "Kiss Me I'm Irish" because he had heard me say I loved the song. I wouldn't do it though so after they sung Beggarman and they were getting ready to leave again, he yelled it. Then when Pat asked who had yelled that, he pointed to me. I immediately started shaking my head and pointing at him and then Sis started pointing at him too.
After the show I had a migraine (not from Storm--it actually started getting better when they started playing but from the other band and from being crammed in the room) so we decided to leave. But we wanted shot glasses. Since Pat was standing in the middle of the room with a box of them, my sister led me over to where he was (I don't see the greatest in dim light). When he turned his attention to us, I said to him "You didn't dance." He leaned over so he could yell in my ear "There's no fuckin' room!" He definately has a point, I have never seen a stage that small. And I've seen some very oddly put together stages. This one was just tiny. They were really crammed in there.
Ummm songs they played:
Salt Lick
Hello Monday
Johnny Tarr
Never Drink 'Em Dry
Bare in the Basin
Stain the Grout
Beggarman
Kiss Me I'm Irish
Scalliwag
Born to be a Bachelor
I Miss My Home
Don't Go for the One
Kelly's Wellies
Me and the Moon (they of course did the sing-along and when they were done, were having us scream. Before they started the new song, Pat turns to Twigger and goes "Your side sucks!")
Pina Colada in a Pint Glass
Abbey Set
Courtin' in the Kitchen
Punjab Paddy (but without the usual intro)
The Getaway (but they didn't do the zero to 60 joke)
Drink the Night Away (Twigger had switched to water and had to run around to find a beer to do the toast at the end)
Johnny Jump Up
I'm sure they sang other stuff but I can't remember what. This was probably the best show I've been to at least as far as the band was concerned. They just came out rocking and kept going.
So I've got to get dressed now and run up to my cousin's. I am going to download the video I took and will hopefully put it on the web soon. I know at least one of the songs you can hear me singing on so I'm not sure I will post those, but I will try before tomorrow to get pictures and video up. Finally I got some really decent pictures cuz we were soooo close.
We got home about 4am, fell into bed, then got up at 9:30 to get Sis packed and off to the airport. Then I went and had family dinner with the grandparents and home to bed to sleep for a few hours. Got up around 6, stayed up for a few hours, then back to bed. Finally today I feel awake.
Oh and I just found out that I don't have to work til Oct 20th.
And since I edited this, here's a link to Sis's journal: http://littleowl1.livejournal.com/2006/10/02/
