[Error: unknown template qotd]I cannot remember ever having to hide books from my moms. They were pretty accepting of anything I wanted to read. There were times when they would read the book first and then let me read it, but that's all they can remember. My father, on the other hand, hated most of the books I read--he found them inappropriate for a girl. So I would purposely read them in front of him to annoy him (yes I was an evil child.)

I can remember one incident though, when I was in fifth grade, when my mother got called in for a parent conference. I was reading in class. (Horrors!)

My mother said "Isn't this a reading class?"
"Well, yes."
"Is she completing her work?"
"Yes."
"Is she bothering the other students?"
"No."
"Is she causing any trouble?"
"No."
"Then LEAVE HER ALONE!"

Gotta love the stupidity of the school system I grew up in.

I used to get in trouble for reading in class also. I would be done with my work and it would go like this:

"Jordan, why are you reading?"

Me: "Because I finished all my work and there is nothing else to do."

"You can't read in class."

Me: "But I finished all my work..."

The idiocy of the school system.

Yes. I had the same issue you did (I saw your post today)...I was far above my grade level--reading high school books in 5th grade. I got in trouble for reading Johnny Tremain.

So I switched to writing. Wrote my first novel by 8th grade. It'll never see the light of day again, but I did start, write and finish it then. I've written, um, I'm not sure how many since then, but a few.

Your mom sounds awesome! I hope I'm like that when I'm a mom.

My parents never noticed what I read, all three of them. They never were much into reading or anything so it was something beyond them half the time. And I was a super good kid so they didn't bother me. My school didn't bother me either, I was the teacher's favorite 99 % of the time.

I think mom was just frustrated that she had to come in for a conference over something that stupid. She can be awesome though!
